Gavin, my colleague from the NASA Space Apps Challenge, recently attended a Hardware group at the C4Di in Hull. He found that the group was largely working on Pixel bots, designed by Rob Miles, lecturer at Hull University. You can find the details of the Pixel Bots here and they look like a fun project with a low cost point.
One of the challenges they are working on at the moment are how to deal with differences in the stepper motors to keep the bots going in a straight line. Gavin with his eminently practical bent suggested a hardware rather than software solution, changing the design to make use of a lockable differential, which looking at the the RC community seems like a possible solution, but quite a large redesign.
Anyway this project looks like it is one worth visiting when I get my Nfire One working.
