NASA Space Apps Challenge York

Having gone quiet on the subject of the NASA Space Apps Challenge you would be forgiven for thinking that I was not actually attending, but in reality my feverish preparation have left me with little time to blog.

After thrashing out ideas with colleges I decided to go for a hardware challenge, taking on the Launch a Global Experience challenge, with the intention of creating an immersive 3D experience.
With limited skill with graphics I recruited a colleague who had a lot of interest in video and was exited to try working with a 3D panorama.

Hauling a lot of hardware across the York campus, along with what was to become an infamous sub-woofer, I recruited two students to the cause who were invaluable help. (Thanks guys!) and 32 hours later we came up with this:

Well, not exactly this. An app, a 3D model, 360 video and more hardware to boot, making a fun 3D experience which literally had a queue to try. You can find out more on the project pages of the NASA Space Apps Challenge or on the Launch Sight Github page both of which are still being updated at the time of writing.

I had a great time, met good people and ate more pizza than I should have, just as you would expect from an extremely well organised event. What was a big surprise was that we won!

Winning is not the end of this project though and we are now working on a presentation to go into the global judging.
