My soldering iron burnt out

I have not yet been able to address the issue I previously found on my mini kit board by Velleman as my soldering iron has stopped working altogether. It was cheap, so it is not world breaking, but I did have a look around before getting another. A soldering station with a variable temperature setting was very attractive, but I could not find one in the very low budget range which was not being panned by critics, so rather than splash out when I am still learning I  have opted for another cheap pencil type soldering iron. The iron is mains operated as opposed to gas as I don't really feel the need to be  soldering in the field and so far have had no problems with the cable. I have also opted for 40W as this is what the mini kits I have been working on are rated for and I believe I will do several more of these before I start on more ambitious projects.
