Electrical tinkering

After attending the Space Apps Challenge Hackathon in York I realised that the breadth of my technical skills was limited and I have started to look at improving them. To that end I have been working on improving my skills in electrical engineering. I have started pretty small with what amounts to the paint by numbers of the electrical world, picking up a couple of hobby projects from Maplin. It is the first time I will be working with a PCB and soldering iron, so for me this is a bit of a challenge and something new to get my teeth into, as well as familiarising me with some of the components I will be putting together.

My first project is a stroboscope. A pair of flashing white LEDs with a variable flash rate. It is a pretty small board, but I have been pretty happy with the end result, my soldering is not too messy and the unit worked first time, so I didn't have to do any problem solving to work out where I had gone wrong.

I used Maplins 40w soldering kit a cheap pair of helping hands and to make sure I didn't do too much damage to the dining room table a good sized cutting mat.
